A handsome Beaux-Arts building of brownish Roman brick and terra cotta, which once housed the Pennsylvania National Bank at the intersection of Penn Avenue and Butler Street, announces itself just as prominently as the contemplative figure cut by the Doughboy sculpture, perched atop a platform in front of the c.1900 building, as the official landmarks that welcome everyone into the neighborhood of Lawrenceville. The interplay of the hilly landscape, the old building, and sculpture, which help define Doughboy Square create an altogether welcoming assemblage for a lively, diverse neighborhood. This corner of the city is also home to Desmone Architects, probably one of the most creative architecture firms in the city. Join us for a special tour of the offices of Desmone, where you will get a chance to not only see behind-the-scenes of how a modern architecture firm functions, but also learn how the firm adapted an old bank building it saved from demolition into its modern offices. As part of the adaptation, Desmone designed and built from the ground up a three-story addition to the historic building, completed in 2019. Desmone Architects puts into practice the famous assertion by Winston Churchill that is etched in the frieze of its addition: We shape our buildings; thereafter, they shape us.
