Police Chief David Wermes Retirement Ceremony

The Village of Wauconda wishes to thank Chief David Wermes upon the announcement of his retirement. Chief Wermes has loyally served the Village of Wauconda as Police Chief for more than 10 years after completing a distinguished law enforcement career with the Village of Schaumburg. Chief Wermes' consistent leadership, positive presence in Wauconda, and tireless work ethic leaves the Village and the Police Department well-positioned for the future. Mayor Sode and the Village Board will recognize Chief Wermes at a retirement ceremony on Monday, June 1, 2026 at 2:30 p.m. at the Wauconda Park District (600 N Main St). Mayor Sode intends to appoint Deputy Chief John Combs as Police Chief at the regular meeting of the Village Board on Tuesday, June 2 at 6 p.m. at Village Hall. Deputy Chief Combs joined the Wauconda Police Department in 1998. He has steadily advanced through the ranks while also performing specialized roles including K9 Officer and serving as a member of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) Emergency Services (SWAT) team. Deputy Chief Combs is also a graduate of the FBI National Police Academy and the Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command.
