Join us for a Perspective Tour with Austin-based sculptor and curator Jade Walker exploring The Living Temple: The World of Moki Cherry. Perspective Tours is a talk and tour series in which guest artists, curators, and subject matter experts share information about their own work while lending insights into our exhibitions. Jade Walker's textile-based practice draws on the histories of women's work, the knitters, weavers, and spinners who encoded meaning into cloth, often invisibly, across generations. Her research traces how fiber arts have long served as a form of communication, record-keeping, and quiet resistance, passed down through the labor of mothers and their mothers before them. Moki Cherry built her entire artistic life around a similar premise. Raising her children, among them musician Neneh Cherry, while collaborating with her partner, jazz composer Don Cherry, Moki wove caregiving and creativity into a single, inseparable practice. Her tapestries, costumes, and transformed domestic spaces were not made alongside her life as a mother; they were made from it. As she put it: Home is stage, stage is home. Together, Walker and Cherry illuminate a tradition of artists for whom motherhood is not a backdrop to the work, but its very material. Walker will open with a reflection on her own practice before leading a tour through the exhibition. Event Schedule 2:15-3P Introduction to Walker's practice | Community Room 3:15-4P Tour led by Walker | 1st & 2nd Floor Galleries About Jade Walker Jade Walker is an Austin-based sculptor whose textile-based work explores woven materials as vessels of comfort and communication, drawing on wartime knitting espionage, fairy tales, women's work, and ancestral storytelling to examine how linear systems like textile patterns, written text, and musical notation all speak to the human experience. Her work has been exhibited widely, including solo shows at Women and Their Work, the Elisabet Ney Museum, the Austin Museum of Art (now The Contemporary Austin), Blue Star Contemporary Arts, and Wrong in Marfa. Walker currently serves as Director + Curator at the Elisabet Ney Museum and sits on the boards of Fusebox and A3.
