EMBROIDERY AS MEMORY w/ NICOLE MONTGOMERY One-day | 5:30 - 8:30PM | Thursday, July 30 | Sliding scale This embroidery workshop is designed for participants to build an understanding of basic stitches while exploring the importance of hand-sewing in history. After a technical demonstration, the session will focus on stitchmaking as a form of storytelling. Participants are invited to embroider an image from memory, drawing, printed photograph, or from the stencils provided. The workshop will culminate with learning how to mount your stitched images onto a textile of your choice. Participants are welcome to bring photographs or sketches of their own to use as personal stencils. Examples: doors, profile of a face, flower. All materials will be provided, including the option to stitch on a tote or patch. __ Nicole, a native of Alexandria, Virginia has been sewing since she was 12 years old. She made both of her high school prom dresses, both being original and adapted designs. She studied fashion merchandising in college and went on to work as a visual merchandising coordinator and stylist for 10 years in home furnishings and fashion apparel. Once given the opportunity to follow her dreams in 2020, has been working in the costume/wardrobe industry in NYC for the last 3 years and has worked on and off Broadway from American Ballet Theatre to &Juliet at The Stephen Sondheim Theater. The Bed Stuy Brooklyn neighborhood is where the heart of her work has begun to flourish. She teaches and volunteers with local non-profit organization Black Girls Sew, where mentor and founder/creator, Hekima Hapa leads classes and students through cut n sew fashion projects and field trips to experience and learn from the world around them.
