Austin Museum Day

About this Event

Join The Contemporary Austin on Sept 20 (Sun) at both Laguna Gloria and the Jones Center for Austin Museum Day! Admission is free. Advanced reservations recommended. Check out austinmuseums.org to see a list of participating venues across the city. Laguna Gloria Discover the history of Laguna Gloria like never before! Journey back into the ecological and human histories that shaped this place in the new, self-guided audio tour Listening to the Land - Laguna Gloria. Encounter the many people who traversed this region, from early Texas socialites to industrious Mormon settlers, and Indigenous peoples. Slow down, learn local histories, and consider the interconnectedness of people and place. From 12-3P, the historic Elisabet Ney Museum joins us to present interdisciplinary artist Virginia L. Montgomery's Breaking the Mold Art Crate, an educational learning experience designed by the Ney to explore art and nature through hands-on activities. Plus, enjoy a screening of Montgomery's surreal short films that investigate mysticism, science, and her own neurodivergent world. Observe moths from the UT Insect Collection, and try your hand at plein air watercolor postcard painting. Jones Center Be among the first to experience our new fall exhibitions - The Living Temple: The World of Moki Cherry, largest exhibition to date in the United States celebrating the boundary-breaking work of artist Moki Cherry, and HOST: Laura Lit, featuring a suite of Lit's drawings presented in conjunction with her outdoor sculptures on view at Laguna Gloria. Head to the Community Room and channel your creativity at the Art Cart with hands-on artmaking activities inspired by the exhibitions. Then make your way to the Moody Rooftop and take in the downtown vistas while enjoying complimentary drinks and snacks
