A Red Flag Warning has been issued for Sweetwater, Natrona, and Johnson Counties, effective immediately until 7:00 PM MDT today, October 9. Residents in these areas should exercise extreme caution due to critical fire weather conditions.

The National Weather Service in Riverton, WY, issued the warning due to a combination of strong southwest winds, gusting up to 45 mph, low relative humidity between 10 to 15 percent, and unseasonably warm temperatures ranging from the upper 70s to mid-80s. These conditions can lead to erratic fire behavior.

Affected areas include Sweetwater County, Rock Springs BLM, Flaming Gorge NRA, Natrona County, Casper BLM, Johnson County, Casper BLM, and the Granite, Green, Ferris, and Rattlesnake Mountains.

A Red Flag Warning signifies that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will occur shortly. The National Weather Service advises that a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. Residents are urged to avoid any activities that could spark a fire.
