Sneaker Wave Threat for North Coast Beaches Through Monday
A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for coastal Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino Counties from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon due to the threat of dangerous sneaker waves.
Residents and visitors along the coasts of Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino Counties are advised to exercise extreme caution near the ocean beginning Sunday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) Eureka has issued a Beach Hazards Statement due to an increased threat of sneaker waves, effective from 4 AM PDT Sunday, October 11, until 5 PM PDT Monday, October 12.
A very long period westerly swell is expected to produce large, unexpected waves that can sweep across beaches without warning. These powerful waves pose a significant danger, capable of pulling individuals into the sea from rocks, jetties, and sandy areas. Sneaker waves can also dislodge and move heavy objects like logs, creating a crushing hazard.
The NWS stresses that even a calm-appearing ocean can be deceptive, with periods of smaller waves preceding a dangerous sneaker wave. To ensure safety, it is critical to avoid rocks and jetties, steer clear of steep beaches, and maintain a significant distance from the water's edge. Never turn your back on the ocean.
