A Red Flag Warning is in effect for parts of Humboldt, Elko, Eureka, and Lander Counties today, October 9, until 10:00 PM PDT. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Elko, NV, has issued the warning due to a combination of high winds and low humidity, which will create critical fire weather conditions.
Affected areas include Humboldt County-Quinn, Western Elko County, northern Eureka and Lander Counties north of Interstate 80, Central Elko County, and Eastern Elko County.
Sustained winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph are expected this afternoon. Humidity levels will drop as low as 10-15%. These conditions mean any fires that develop are likely to spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended. The NWS also highlights Fire Weather Zones 437 (Humboldt County-Quinn) and 469 (Central Elko County) as having the highest threat due to active wildfires.
Additionally, a Fire Weather Watch has been issued for the same areas from Saturday morning through Saturday evening for similar conditions. A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are occurring or will shortly. A Fire Weather Watch indicates critical fire weather conditions are forecast. Residents should stay informed by listening for later forecasts and possible Red Flag Warnings.
