Dangerous Rip Currents Expected Along Gulf Coast Through Sunday
A Rip Current Statement is in effect for coastal Alabama and Florida until Sunday afternoon, warning of dangerous rip currents. Swimmers should exercise caution and follow safety guidelines.
A Rip Current Statement has been issued for coastal areas of Alabama and Florida, effective immediately until Sunday afternoon. Swimmers are advised to exercise extreme caution and follow safety instructions due to dangerous rip currents.
The affected areas include Mobile and Baldwin Coastal Counties in Alabama, and Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa Coastal Counties in Florida. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Mobile, AL, issued this statement on October 10 at 6:19 PM CDT, warning that rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
The NWS advises swimmers to swim near a lifeguard if possible. If caught in a rip current, individuals should relax and float, avoiding swimming against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
