Cargill Bolsters Wichita with Major Meat Plant Expansion

WICHITA, Kan. -- Cargill Meat Solutions, headquartered in Wichita, announced plans Thursday to invest $150 million in expanding its flagship beef processing plant on the city's west side, creating 450 full-time jobs and reinforcing Kansas' role as a national agribusiness powerhouse. The project, detailed in a Wichita Eagle exclusive, includes a 75,000-square-foot addition for advanced packaging lines and automated storage systems, targeting increased exports to Asia and Europe. Construction breaks ground in June 2026, with completion slated for Q4 2027, led by local firm ARCO National Construction.

The expansion addresses surging demand for U.S. beef, building on Cargill's recent $42 million upgrade at its Alberta facility that tripled export capacity. In Wichita, the plant already processes 4,200 cattle daily, yielding 2.8 million pounds of beef products. 'This investment secures Kansas jobs and strengthens our supply chain for ranchers from Dodge City to the Flint Hills,' said Cargill Protein Group President Brian Sikes, whose 900-employee HQ moved to a new $70 million, 188,000-square-foot building in 2018.

Sedgwick County Commission Chair Ryan Bickerstaff praised the move as 'a lifeline for our agriculture economy, which supports 1 in 5 Kansas jobs.' The project aligns with state incentives from the Kansas Department of Commerce, including $5 million in tax credits. Amid national meat shortages, Cargill's February 2024 acquisition of two Northeast plants from Ahold Delhaize underscores its growth strategy, positioning Wichita as the nerve center for North American protein operations.
