McLaughlin Sues NY Over Bail Reform Laws | Rensselaer

Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin filed a lawsuit against New York State on May 16, challenging the constitutionality of the state's bail reform laws.

McLaughlin argues the reforms endanger public safety and strip local governments of authority to protect their communities. He cited increased crime and repeat offenders released back onto streets as evidence the laws fail their stated purpose.

McLaughlin said the state legislature passed the bail reform without consulting law enforcement or local officials.
