Springsteen Memoir & Van Halen Tour Kickoff: Rock History on Sept 27

Duval County music fans may remember significant rock history moments that occurred on Sept. 27 throughout the decades. These events include album releases, tour starts and somber anniversaries.

Bruce Springsteen released his autobiography, Born to Run, on Sept. 27, 2016. He began writing the book after his 2009 Super Bowl halftime performance. The memoir details his Freehold, New Jersey, upbringing, his father's struggles with mental health and alcoholism, and his early inspirations, including seeing Elvis Presley on television. It traces his career from playing in New Jersey bars to forming the E Street Band.

On Sept. 27, 2007, Van Halen kicked off a tour in Charlotte, North Carolina. This marked David Lee Roth's return to the band since 1985. Alex and Eddie Van Halen performed alongside Roth, with 16-year-old Wolfgang Van Halen making his tour debut on bass.

Ten years earlier, on Sept. 27, 1997, INXS performed their final concert with singer Michael Hutchence. "Suicide Blonde" was their last song. Hutchence died two months later.

Sept. 27, 1986, saw The Beatles re-enter the charts with "Twist and Shout" after its inclusion in the film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Tragically, Metallica bassist Cliff Burton died that same day in a bus accident during the band's "Master of Puppets" tour.

Two rock legends also celebrate birthdays on this date. Marvin Lee Aday, known as Meat Loaf, was born in 1947. Randy Bachman, a member of The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive, was born in 1944.
