Residents across Duval County can expect typical fall weather this week, with no tropical storm or hurricane threats anticipated for Northeast Florida or Southeast Georgia. While beaches may see increased wave action, the immediate concern for Duval remains enjoying cooler temperatures. This contrasts with areas further south in Florida, which could experience increased rainfall due to developing low pressure systems.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs through Nov. 30. As of Oct. 4, 2026, the National Hurricane Center has reported no Atlantic hurricanes, a record for the satellite era dating to 1966. Forecasters attribute this pattern to strong wind shear dominating the Atlantic Basin, often associated with El Niño conditions.
Forecasters are monitoring a potential area for tropical development in the Western Gulf of Mexico over the next week. A slow-moving front is expected to become stationary, stretching from the Gulf across Florida and into the Southwest Atlantic. This front will likely spawn multiple low-pressure areas that will generally move east and northeast.
While the Western Gulf shows the most potential for tropical development, a separate low-pressure system is anticipated to form along the front over or near Florida by midweek. This system is expected to be non-tropical but could enhance rainfall across the Florida Peninsula. Heavy rain is likely for much of Florida over the next four to seven days, possibly impacting the St. Johns River.
For Duval County and surrounding areas, forecasts show no direct tropical threats. Residents should stay informed about weather updates.
