Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene’s Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.

Mali had a population of 22,634,423 in 2025. Mali has not yet reported any Churches of the Nazarene. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole. GNTC Student Garrett Awarded $5,000 Advocate Health Scholarship for Respiratory Care Studies

Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) student Kristin Garrett has received a $5,000 Advocate Health Community Scholarship to help cover education costs as she pursues an associate degree in Respiratory Care. Garrett, a Rome resident, anticipates graduating in May 2027. She has been employed at Atrium Health Floyd in Rome as a public safety supervisor for more than three years. “After graduation, I plan to become a registered respiratory therapist,” Garrett said. “I hope to continue serving at Atrium Health Floyd, part of Advocate Health.” “As a first-generation college student, I’m proud to currently carry a 4.0 GPA and am challenging myself to maintain it through graduation,” Garrett said, adding that she is also a member of GNTC’s chapter of the National Technical Honor Society.  GNTC student Kristen Garrett has received an Advocate Health Community Scholarship. Forty $5,000 Advocate Health Community Scholarships were awarded by Advocate Health, including 20 awards to community members and dependents of teammates and 20 to eligible Advocate Health teammates across its service area. The program supports the development of a strong and diverse future workforce. “Kristin is an intelligent and dedicated student to her studies in pursuing a career in Respiratory Therapy, displaying dependability, reliability and initiative,” said Zenia Bratton, program director and instructor of Respiratory Care at GNTC. “Respiratory therapists are in high demand and are trained to work therapeutically with people suffering from pulmonary disease,” Bratton said. Advocate Health said these scholarships support students in healthcare and STEM-related fields, including business, finance, engineering, health care, human resources, information technology, mathematics, science and technology. Lucille 'Lucy' Chandler, 88, LaFayette

Lucille “Lucy” Thomas Chandler, age 88, of LaFayette passed away Friday, May 29, 2026. She was born on December 9, 1937, to the late Amsar Thomas and Irene Gross Thomas in Trenton, Georgia.Lucy graduated from LaFayette High School. She went on to substitute teaching where she developed a love for early childhood education. Lucy received a bachelor’s degree from West Georgia College in 1975, and later earned a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education in 1979.She devoted more than two decades to shaping young minds through her work with the Walker County Board of Education, where she taught from 1976 until her retirement in 1998.Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Jerry Chandler; her two sons, Thomas Lamar Chandler and Jeffrey David Chandler; sister, Jackie Shelby; and brother, Gary Thomas.Survivors include her son, Mark (Rhonda) Chandler of Rock Spring; grandsons, Clayton (Emily) Chandler of LaFayette, Tyler Chandler of LaFayette, Zach Chandler of LaFayette, and granddaughter, Brooke Chandler Hall of Atlanta; two great-grandchildren, Caroline Chandler and Leo Hall; sisters, Ann Snyder and Joyce Cook; brothers, Jim and Leon Thomas; and numerous nieces and nephews.Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, at the funeral home with a graveside service to follow at the LaFayette City Cemetery with Rev. Danny Freeman officiating.Arrangements are by Wallis-Wilbanks Funeral Home, LaFayette.
