Strong thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 50 mph are approaching Duplin County, prompting a Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service until 1:45 PM EDT. Seek shelter if outdoors.

DUPLIN COUNTY, NC – Residents in Duplin County should be aware of strong thunderstorms currently tracking through the area. A Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City NC at 1:00 PM EDT indicates wind gusts up to 50 mph are possible.

These strong thunderstorms were detected by Doppler radar at 1:00 PM EDT, extending from 6 miles northwest of Harrells to near Rowan, moving northeast at 35 mph. The NWS warns that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.

Affected locations include Wallace, Rose Hill, Harrells, Magnolia, and Teachey. This Special Weather Statement is effective immediately and expires at 1:45 PM EDT. If outdoors, the NWS advises seeking shelter inside a building. A Tornado Watch remains in effect for eastern North Carolina until 5:00 PM EDT.
