Fire Danger Alert: Strong Winds, Low Humidity Expected Today
A Special Weather Statement warns of increased fire danger today in Yuma, Kit Carson, Cheyenne (KS), and Dundy counties due to strong winds and low humidity; outdoor burning is discouraged.
Residents in Yuma, Kit Carson, Cheyenne (Kansas), and Dundy counties are advised to exercise extreme caution today, October 12, due to a Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kansas. Conditions are favorable for rapid fire spread.
Outdoor burning and activities that could cause sparks or flames are strongly discouraged. Fire and emergency officials are on alert for potential grass and crop fires.
The alert is in effect from 9 AM MDT (10 AM CDT) to 4 PM MDT (5 PM CDT). West-southwesterly winds of 15 to 30 mph are expected this morning, decreasing through the afternoon. Relative humidity will drop to 10 to 15 percent, with temperatures reaching the lower to mid-80s. These conditions, particularly the overlap of stronger winds and low humidity for one to two hours this afternoon, could make any fire difficult to control.
