Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Houston; Prepare for Wind and Major Flooding
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Houston by NWS Tallahassee FL, warning of potential tropical storm-force winds and major flooding over the next 48 hours; residents should prepare immediately for hazardous winds and extensive rainfall impacts.
HOUSTON – The National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Houston, effective October 7 at 4:52 PM EDT. This means tropical storm-force winds are possible within the area within the next 48 hours. Communities including Dothan and Cottonwood are affected.
Residents should plan for hazardous winds of equivalent tropical storm force. Peak wind forecasts are 15-25 mph with gusts to 35 mph, but the potential exists for winds of 39 to 57 mph. Efforts to protect property should begin immediately. Potential impacts include damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes, as well as broken tree limbs and scattered power outages. Complete all preparations before the wind becomes hazardous.
The NWS warns of potential for major flooding rain. Forecasts indicate 3-6 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts. Emergency plans should include the potential for major flooding, and evacuations and rescues are likely. Strongly consider protective actions if you are in a flood-vulnerable area and heed any flood watches and warnings. Failure to take action will likely result in serious injury or loss of life. Extensive impacts from flooding could include widespread evacuations, rapidly overflowing rivers, and floodwaters entering structures, making many roads impassable.
Tornadoes are not expected at this time. The Tropical Storm Watch is set to expire on October 8, 2026, at 1:00 AM UTC. For the latest information, visit NWS Tallahassee or the Alabama Emergency Management Agency.
