A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Dothan and Cottonwood, effective immediately, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL. Residents are urged to complete all preparations and move to safe shelter as hazardous conditions are expected to begin before 1:30 PM UTC today, October 9, 2026.

The NWS forecasts peak winds of 20-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with a potential for winds reaching 58 to 73 mph. Significant wind damage is possible, including damage to roofing, siding, mobile homes, and numerous downed trees. Roads may become impassable due to debris, and scattered power outages are anticipated.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 3-6 inches of rain expected, potentially leading to major flooding. Evacuations and rescues are likely. Rivers and small streams may overflow, and floodwaters could enter many structures. Heed all flood watches and warnings.

The situation is favorable for several tornadoes, some potentially intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be prepared to shelter quickly. For more information, visit weather.gov/tallahassee or ema.alabama.gov.
