Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Dothan, Cottonwood; Prepare Now

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Dothan and Cottonwood, with potential for hazardous winds, major flooding, and tornadoes; residents are urged to complete preparations immediately.

HOUSTON – The National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Dothan and Cottonwood, effective October 7 at 11:00 PM EDT. This watch indicates the potential for tropical storm conditions within the next 48 hours. Residents are urged to act now to complete preparations before hazardous weather arrives.

Forecasts indicate peak winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Limited damage to property such as porches, awnings, and unanchored mobile homes is possible, along with downed tree limbs and scattered power outages.

Major flooding rain is also a significant concern, with 3-6 inches of rainfall expected, and locally higher amounts. This could lead to extensive flooding, potentially prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may overflow their banks, and floodwaters could enter structures. Heed any flood watches and warnings.

A few tornadoes are also possible. Emergency plans should include the potential for tornadoes. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. If your shelter is vulnerable, prepare to relocate.

This Tropical Storm Watch is effective until October 8, 2026, 7:00 AM UTC. For local weather conditions and forecasts, visit NWS Tallahassee at weather.gov/tallahassee. Information from the Alabama Emergency Management Agency is available at ema.alabama.gov.
