Extreme Storm Surge Warning for Southern Hancock County

Southern Hancock County is under an Extreme Storm Surge Warning with life-threatening inundation of 3-5 feet possible through Saturday morning; residents should remain sheltered.

SOUTHERN HANCOCK COUNTY, MS – A life-threatening Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Southern Hancock County, effective immediately through Saturday morning. The National Weather Service in New Orleans, LA, issued the Extreme severity warning today, October 9, at 10:02 AM CDT.

Residents in Kiln, Pearlington, Bay St. Louis, Diamondhead, and Waveland should shelter against life-threatening storm surge of greater than 3 feet above ground. Peak storm surge inundation is possible at 3-5 feet above ground in surge-prone areas. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete, and evacuees should be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. Remain sheltered in a safe location and do not venture outside.

Wind speeds are forecast to be below tropical storm force, with peak winds of 25-35 mph and gusts to 45 mph. While significant wind impacts are not expected, conditions may be gusty. There is little to no potential for flooding rain or tornadoes.
