Absentee Options Request a Ballot Drop Boxes Military & Overseas Voters Important Information Absentee voting lets eligible voters receive and vote their ballot by mail rather than voting in person. Voters may request an absentee ballot for one specific election, or they may join the Permanent Absentee List to automatically receive an absentee ballot for each future election for which they are eligible. After completing an absentee ballot, voters may return it by mail or deposit it in a secure ballot drop box during the voting period. Ballot drop boxes are monitored by 24-hour video surveillance. For electioneering purposes, ballot drop boxes are considered polling places. Campaigning and campaign signs are prohibited within 100 feet of a drop box. Choose the Absentee Option That Works Best for You One-Time Absentee Ballot This option is best if you want a ballot mailed to you for one specific election. You submit an absentee ballot request for the election. Your ballot is mailed to you when ballots are available. You return your completed ballot by mail or secure drop box. You will need to submit a new request for future elections. Permanent Absentee List This option is best if you regularly vote from home and want absentee ballots automatically mailed to you for future eligible elections. You opt in to the Permanent Absentee List once. You automatically receive absentee ballots for future eligible elections. You return each completed ballot by mail or secure drop box. You can still update your voter registration information when needed. A one-time absentee request sends you a ballot for one election. Joining the Permanent Absentee List means ballots will automatically be mailed to you for future eligible elections. Voters are not eligible for the permanent absentee list if they want their ballot delivered to an out-of-state address; these voters can opt for a one-time absentee ballot. Request an Absentee Ballot or Join the Permanent Absentee List Apply Online Voters can request an absentee ballot online through the New Mexico Secretary of State’s absentee portal. Want to join the Permanent Absentee List? While applying online, be sure to opt in during Step 4 of the application process. Apply Online Use a Paper Application Voters may also print and submit a paper absentee ballot application. Want to join the Permanent Absentee List? Make sure to check the box requesting to join the Permanent Absentee List before submitting your application. Print Paper Application Track Your Ballot After you apply, you can check your absentee ballot status online. Use NMVOTE.org to confirm your voter information, check whether your ballot has been mailed, and track whether your completed ballot has been received. Track Your Ballot Reminder: Absentee ballots must be received by the deadline to be counted. Returning your ballot early helps make sure it arrives on time. Returning Your Absentee Ballot Return by Mail You may return your completed absentee ballot by mail. If you choose to mail your ballot, send it early to allow enough time for delivery. Return by Secure Drop Box You may return your completed absentee ballot to any secure ballot drop box during the voting period. Several drop boxes are drive-up and can be accessed without leaving your car. Return at Any Open Voting Location During early voting and on Election Day, voters may also bring their completed absentee ballot to any open polling location and place it in the secure drop box located inside the voting site during voting hours. No postage needed: Secure drop boxes at voting locations and standalone drop box sites provide a convenient way to return your absentee ballot directly to election officials. Secure Drop Box Locations Map Military & Overseas Voters Are you a service member, eligible family member, or a U.S. citizen living overseas? You can vote absentee from anywhere in the world. The easiest way to get started is through the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP). How the process works: Complete the FPCA, or Federal Post Card Application, to register and/or request an absentee ballot. Review your information and choose how you want to receive your ballot when available. Print the form. You may need access to a printer. Sign the form and follow the submission instructions.
