Vaping Tops Tobacco Use Among Delta Youth
Electronic cigarettes have replaced traditional cigarettes as the dominant form of tobacco use among middle and high school students in Delta, according to the National Youth Tobacco Survey.
Flavored e-cigarettes drive much of the appeal. Fruit, mint, menthol, and sweet flavors attract young users and increase initiation rates, researchers found. Adolescents who vape face higher risks of later smoking cigarette tobacco.
The Surgeon General identifies e-cigarette use among youth as a public health concern. Nicotine exposure during adolescence can disrupt brain development and complicate quitting. Many teens do not view vaping as tobacco use in the same way they view cigarettes.
Millard School District reports historically low high school cigarette smoking rates. But dual use—where youth smoke both cigarettes and e-cigarettes—remains a concern. Adolescents who begin nicotine use face higher risks of long-term addiction and smoking-related disease.
