Orleans County Raises Senior Property Tax Exemption to 65%

Staff Writer
June 11, 2026

The Orleans County Legislature voted Tuesday to expand property tax relief for senior homeowners, raising the maximum exemption to 65% of a home's assessed value.

The exemption applies to primary residences owned by people 65 and older who meet income requirements. A home assessed at $100,000, for example, would have its taxable value reduced to $35,000 under the new rate.

Seniors who already receive the exemption may see their benefit increase automatically, though some may need to reapply or submit updated income documentation. New applicants must demonstrate they meet both the age and income requirements.

The Real Property Tax Services Department administers the program. For information about eligibility and applications, residents can call 585-589-5400.
