DeLand Police Department Swears in Three New Officers

The DeLand Police Department swore in three new officers this spring, all with ties to the city.

Officer Garrett Shurdom, sworn in March 23, grew up in DeLand and graduated from DeLand High School. His father served as a K9 officer with Casselberry Police Department, and his uncle worked as a SWAT commander with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

Officer Lucas Formel took his oath March 30. He joined the U.S. Navy in 2013 and spent seven years with Pensacola Police Department before returning to DeLand with his wife, Ashley, to be closer to family.

Officer Benjamin Orden, sworn in April 27, graduated from DeLand High School in 2022 and earned his two-year degree from Daytona State College.

All three have completed their training and are now serving in the department.
