Trump Visits Mount Rushmore for Independence Day Celebration

CUSTER, S.D. — President Donald Trump visited Mount Rushmore in South Dakota on Friday, participating in an Independence Day celebration that included a speech and a fireworks display. This marked the first fireworks at the national memorial in 11 years.

The event occurred as the United States prepared for its 250th anniversary. Officials closed the monument in preparation for the presidential visit and fireworks show. Mount Rushmore has not hosted fireworks since 2009 due to environmental concerns, including fire hazards.

Local authorities established a First Amendment area for protesters outside the memorial. Protesters gathered in this designated space during the event.

President Trump had publicly expressed his admiration for Mount Rushmore in previous statements. In 2017, he stated, "I’d ask whether or not you think I will someday be on Mount Rushmore." He also mentioned the idea during a July 2018 rally in South Carolina, suggesting a reporter from *The New York Times* proposed it to him. In 2020, Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota presented President Trump with a four-foot replica of Mount Rushmore featuring his image alongside the four enshrined presidents. President Trump acknowledged receiving the gift.
