Hyundai Mobis Builds EV Battery Plant in Montgomery, Adds 400 Jobs

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Hyundai Mobis, a top global auto supplier, announced plans in October 2022 to invest $205 million in a 450,000-square-foot EV battery module plant on the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) campus off Interstate 65. Gov. Kay Ivey joined company executives for the reveal, highlighting the project's potential to employ at least 400 workers once at full production. The plant will produce over 200,000 EV battery assemblies annually for HMMA's Montgomery factory and the Kia Georgia plant.

Construction on the Montgomery facility was slated to begin as early as December 2022, with production projected to start in 2024. Video reports confirm the plant is taking shape to manufacture batteries for EVs already rolling out from Hyundai's local lines, including the all-electric Genesis GV70 luxury SUV and a hybrid Santa Fe SUV. Earlier that year, Hyundai committed $300 million to launch EV production at HMMA, adding 200 jobs and bolstering the site's output.

Montgomery's auto cluster continues to expand, with Hyundai's investments reinforcing Alabama's position as a U.S. EV hub. While a separate $200 million expansion by Hyundai Power Transformers USA — focused on power grid equipment — broke ground recently and will create 200 jobs by mid-2027, the Mobis project directly targets vehicle electrification. These developments promise sustained economic growth for the Capital Region, where HMMA has anchored manufacturing since 2005.
