Veterans Suicide Prevention: Secure Firearms in Daytona Beach

Staff Writer
May 30, 2026
Veterans Can Reduce Suicide Risk by Securing Firearms and Medications

Daytona Beach residents can help prevent veteran suicides by securing firearms and medications in their homes, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Unsecured access to lethal means during a suicide crisis increases the risk of irreversible harm. Many suicide crises pass quickly, and a delay in access can provide time for someone to seek support or reconsider.

Firearm owners should store guns unloaded and locked, keep ammunition separate, and use cable locks or gun safes. The VA's "Keep It Secure" initiative offers free cable gun locks at local VA facilities.

Medications also pose a risk. Store prescription and over-the-counter drugs in locked containers, keep only necessary amounts at home, and safely dispose of unused or expired medications.

Conversations about secure storage can be framed around care and protection. Those concerned about a veteran's safety can mention these steps as ways to support wellbeing.

The Veterans Crisis Line operates 24/7 and does not require callers to be in immediate crisis or enrolled in VA benefits. Call 988 then press 1, text 838255, or visit VeteransCrisisLine.net/Chat.
