Daytona Beach residents have an opportunity to delve into a dramatic piece of literary and local history with the upcoming “Tuesday at the Tower” event. This program explores the true story behind Stephen Crane’s classic work, The Open Boat, and its deep connection to the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse.
In 1897, Stephen Crane, already recognized for his novel The Red Badge of Courage, experienced a harrowing shipwreck off the coast of Florida. He was aboard the vessel Commodore when the incident occurred. This traumatic event at sea, coupled with the sight of the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, directly inspired the pages of his unforgettable short story, The Open Boat.
The event will uncover the history of Crane’s ill-fated voyage, highlighting the crucial role the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse played in his survival narrative. Attendees will learn how fact and fiction seamlessly blended to create one of America’s greatest short stories.
