A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for West-Central Georgia counties as Hurricane Isaias strengthens, bringing threats of gusty winds, heavy rain, and tornadoes from late Friday into Saturday. Prepare for potential power outages and flooding.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, GA, for several counties in West-Central Georgia, effective immediately. This includes Chattahoochee, Harris, Heard, Macon, Marion, Meriwether, Muscogee, Pike, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, Troup, Upson, and Webster counties. Residents in these areas should prepare for potential significant impacts from gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and tornadoes as Hurricane Isaias strengthens in the Gulf.
As of 11 AM ET today, October 8th, Hurricane Isaias is strengthening with 85 mph winds, moving east-northeast at 10 mph. The storm is expected to turn northward and accelerate, bringing widespread impacts to North and Central Georgia starting late Friday and continuing into Saturday. Anticipate wind gusts of 40-50 mph, 1 to 3 inches of rain with localized amounts up to 5 inches, and the potential for multiple tornadoes.
These conditions could lead to power outages, localized flash flooding, and river flooding. Damage to property, downed trees, and impassable roads are possible. Tornadoes could cause considerable damage and power loss. Residents should secure outdoor items, have an emergency kit ready, and follow all advice from local officials. Monitor weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news for updates. The next update is expected around 5 PM ET today.
