Dangerous Rip Currents, Large Waves Expected for Northern Outer Banks
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for the Northern Outer Banks today, October 11, from 8 AM to 8 PM EDT, warning of dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves.
Beachgoers in the Northern Outer Banks should exercise extreme caution today due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC. This statement is effective from 8 AM EDT this morning, October 11, until 8 PM EDT this evening.
Dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves are expected in the surf zone. Rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers into deeper water, and dangerous shore break can cause serious neck and back injuries. The National Weather Service advises that the most likely time for strong rip currents will be a couple of hours around low tide, which is expected around 3 PM today, October 11.
If caught in a rip current, remain calm. Swim parallel to the shoreline. If fatigued, float or tread water until you can escape. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. When in breaking waves, protect your head and neck by keeping your hands in front of you at all times.
