Deputy Rescues Father and Son from Rip Current at Bean Point

Deputy Matthew Daugherty of the Manatee County Sheriff's Office rescued a father and son from dangerous currents near Bean Point on Aug. 12, 2025, earning him the sheriff's office Deputy of the Month award for January 2026.

While on patrol, deputies responded to a report of two people struggling in the water unable to reach shore. Daugherty located the pair, who had been swept away while using a boogie board. He removed his gun belt, grabbed a rescue ring, and swam approximately 20 yards to reach them.

Daugherty brought both to safety. Neither sustained injury. Sheriff's officials said his quick actions prevented a potential tragedy.
