A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Dale County, including the areas of Ozark and Fort Rucker, effective immediately as of 8:01 AM EDT, October 8. Tropical storm-force winds are expected within the next 36 hours. The warning, issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee, FL, indicates potential for winds of 39 to 57 mph, with peak gusts up to 35 mph. This warning expires at 4:15 PM UTC today.
Residents in affected areas should act now to complete preparations before hazardous winds begin. Efforts to protect property, such as securing porches, awnings, carports, and unanchored mobile homes, should be underway. Expect limited damage, including broken tree limbs, some snapped or uprooted trees, and scattered power and communications outages. Hazardous driving conditions are possible, especially on elevated roadways.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Emergency plans should account for moderate flooding from 2-4 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts. Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues, and rivers may quickly swell. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life.
The situation is also favorable for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings, and be ready to shelter quickly if one is issued. Tornadoes can cause significant damage and hinder emergency operations.
