Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez warned residents Thursday of a phishing scam using text messages that impersonate the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
The messages claim recipients owe unpaid traffic citations and direct them to click links or submit payments. Neither the Tax Collector's Office nor FLHSMV sends text messages requesting payment or asking recipients to click links for traffic violations, Fernandez said.
Residents who receive such messages should delete them immediately and report them as spam to their mobile provider. To verify any communication from a government agency, contact the agency directly through its official website or a verified phone number.
