Cutler Bay Diabetes Success: CHOICE Program Results
Argentina Garcia spent 19 years with uncontrolled diabetes until Dr. Elizabeth Philippe at Community Health of South Florida referred her to the CHOICE Program, a new initiative that connects patients to education, resources, and personalized support.
Launched in 2024, CHOICE targets patients with A1C levels above 9 and links them to partners including the YMCA, Feeding South Florida, and the American Heart Association. The program addresses barriers beyond medical care: housing, employment, transportation, and access to nutritious food.
"Managing diabetes can be costly and overwhelming, especially for those without insurance, as patients often have to balance expenses like food, housing, and medication," said Eunice Hines, Director of Migrant Services and Outreach at CHI. "Education is key. Understanding nutrition, how to manage the disease, and what happens when it goes untreated can make all the difference in preventing serious complications."
Garcia's diabetes is now under control. She credits the program and her work with Dr. Philippe, emphasizing the importance of consulting doctors and collaborating to find solutions.
The Health Foundation of South Florida and Health Choice Network support the initiative. Hines encourages more patients with uncontrolled diabetes to use the program's resources.
