Federal Judges Report Threats Amidst Criticism

Why it matters locally: While the U.S. Marshals Service doesn't break down threat data by state, the increased scrutiny and threats against federal judges nationwide could affect the judiciary in South Dakota, potentially impacting the ability of federal courts in the state to function without undue pressure.

WASHINGTON – Federal judges across the United States have reported receiving threats against themselves and their family members throughout 2020, the U.S. Marshals Service stated. The agency documented these incidents as political leaders have publicly criticized judicial rulings. Justice correspondent Ali Rogin spoke with two judges regarding their experiences. Judge John McConnell indicated he has received multiple threats. Judge Esther Salas also shared her perspective on the situation. The U.S. Marshals Service, responsible for judicial security, recorded hundreds of threats this year.
