A Heat Advisory has been issued for Dubois, Crawford, and Perry counties in Indiana, and Hancock, Breckinridge, Meade, Ohio, Grayson, Hardin, Larue, Butler, Edmonson, Hart, Green, Logan, Warren, Simpson, Allen, Barren, Monroe, Metcalfe, and Cumberland counties in Kentucky. The advisory is effective immediately, beginning Thursday, September 17 at 8:03 PM EDT, and will remain in effect until Friday, September 18 at 8:00 PM EDT (7:00 PM CDT).
The National Weather Service in Louisville, KY, warns of anticipated heat index values reaching up to 105 degrees. Hot temperatures and high humidity present a risk for heat-related illnesses.
Residents are advised to take precautions: drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, avoid direct sunlight, and check on elderly relatives and neighbors. For those working outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. If someone is overcome by heat, move them to a cool, shaded location immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency; call 911 for assistance.
