Summer Programs Face Challenges From Extreme Weather Conditions

Summer programs for children, which often incorporate outdoor activities, are experiencing challenges from extreme weather. High temperatures and wildfire smoke have become more frequent, creating hazardous conditions for participants.

One example occurred in July at Camp Widjiwagan in Ely, Minnesota. Wildfire smoke covered the area, affecting activities at the camp, which is operated by the YMCA of the North.

Parents commonly seek outdoor programs for their children during the summer months. However, the prevalence of extreme heat and smoke from wildfires can make outdoor environments unsafe.
