Sneaker Wave Threat for Coastal Communities Through Monday Afternoon

A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for coastal Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino Counties due to a threat of dangerous sneaker waves through Monday afternoon, urging extreme caution near the ocean.

Coastal residents and visitors in Del Norte, Northern Coastal Humboldt, Southwestern Humboldt, and Coastal Mendocino Counties are advised to exercise extreme caution near the ocean due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Eureka CA.

The statement is effective immediately, from October 11 at 10:54 PM PDT, and will remain in effect until October 12 at 5:00 PM PDT. A very long period westerly swell is expected to increase the threat of dangerous sneaker waves across the affected coastal areas. The NWS warns that large, unexpected waves can sweep across the beach without warning, potentially pulling people into the sea from rocks, jetties, and beaches. These powerful waves can also move large objects like logs, posing a crushing hazard.

To ensure safety, the NWS urges the public to not be deceived by seemingly calm ocean conditions, as sneaker waves can strike after extended periods of small waves. It is crucial to avoid rocks and jetties, and to stay clear of steep beaches. Always maintain a significant distance from the water's edge and never turn your back on the ocean.
