Sneaker Wave Threat for North Coast Beaches Through Monday
A Beach Hazards Statement warns of increased sneaker wave threats for coastal Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties from late Saturday night through Monday afternoon, urging extreme caution near the ocean.
A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for coastal Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties due to an increased threat of sneaker waves. The National Weather Service (NWS) Eureka CA issued the statement tonight, October 9, at 10:07 PM PDT, effective from late Saturday night through Monday afternoon, October 12, at 5:00 PM PDT.
Residents and visitors in Coastal Del Norte, Northern Coastal Humboldt, Southwestern Humboldt, and Coastal Mendocino Counties are advised to exercise extreme caution near the ocean. Sneaker waves can sweep across beaches without warning, pulling individuals into the sea from rocks, jetties, and beaches. These powerful waves can also move large objects like logs, posing a crushing hazard.
The NWS advises against being fooled by a calm-looking ocean, as significant lulls between sneaker waves can last up to 30 minutes. To ensure safety, avoid rocks and jetties, steer clear of steep beaches, and maintain a significant distance from the water. Never turn your back on the ocean. This statement is expected to expire on October 12 at 5:00 PM PDT.
