Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Gusty Winds and Hail Expected

Residents in Laurel, McCreary, Whitley, and Knox counties should prepare for strong thunderstorms. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, KY, has issued a Special Weather Statement, effective immediately until 10:15 PM EDT.

As of 9:38 PM EDT, a cluster of strong thunderstorms was located near Bark Camp, approximately 13 miles northwest of Williamsburg, moving east at 15 mph. These storms are capable of producing wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea-sized hail. Gusty winds could cause tree limb damage and move unsecured objects. Minor damage to vegetation from hail is possible.

Locations impacted include Williamsburg, Cumberland Falls State Park, and areas along Interstate 75 between mile markers 13 and 29. U.S. Highway 25 East in Knox County (mile markers 22-26) and Laurel County (mile markers 0-2) are also affected.

Torrential rainfall is accompanying these storms, which may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is also present. Lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm; seek safe shelter inside a building or vehicle immediately.
