Buettenback Powers Nebraska to Big Ten Series-Clinching Win at Iowa
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Max Buettenback delivered the game-tying hit, scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and added an RBI single in the ninth as the Nebraska Cornhuskers clinched the Big Ten series with a 6-4 win over Iowa on Sunday at Duane Banks Field. Nebraska (16-20 overall, 5-10 Big Ten) erupted for six runs on seven hits and capitalized on four Iowa errors, while the Hawkeyes (23-11 overall, 14-4 Big Ten) managed eight hits but stranded chances late. Buettenback starred, going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
The series finale capped a rollercoaster weekend for the Huskers in Iowa City. Iowa opened with a 1-0 shutout Friday, stranding eight Nebraska runners, then rallied for an 11-6 comeback win Saturday before a record 2,654 fans, scoring six in the eighth highlighted by Andy Nelson's three-run homer. Nebraska's Sunday triumph avenged those losses, with reliever Broderick inducing a popup and center fielder Silva leaping for the final out to seal it after a tense walk brought the tying run to the plate.
This series win improves Nebraska's conference standing at a critical juncture, strengthening postseason prospects as the Huskers eye the Big Ten Tournament. Next up, NU travels to Omaha on Tuesday, April 15, for a midweek clash with Creighton, keeping momentum alive for Lincoln faithful ahead of the home stretch. The victory echoes Nebraska's recent tournament dominance, including a 2025 title run in Omaha.
