Is 'Woke' Losing Its Original Meaning? A Look at the Word

The word "woke" has become a partisan weapon, obscuring its original, vital meaning. A recent reflection argues the term has been co-opted, losing its deeper significance.

Decades ago, "stay woke" emerged within Black American communities as a caution: remain aware and alert to injustice and hardship, urging people not to ignore reality.

The term evolved, becoming a progressive ideal for some and a pejorative for critics. Both later uses transformed the word from a description into a weapon, the reflection notes.

This shift, the author argues, obscures the profound question of what it means to be truly awake and the personal cost involved. The piece draws parallels to religious texts, citing figures who urged vigilance and confrontation with difficult truths.

"The political fight over the word is real," the author states, "but somewhere underneath it is an actual, old, serious question both sides have stopped asking: what does it mean to be awake, and what does it cost?"
