Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Coosa County; Prepare for Winds, Flooding, Tornadoes
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Coosa County, including Rockford, until 1:30 AM CDT Friday, October 9, with immediate preparations needed for hazardous winds, moderate flooding, and potential tornadoes.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Coosa County, effective immediately as of October 8 at 10:27 PM CDT by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL. The watch specifically impacts Rockford and is set to expire on October 9 at 6:30 AM UTC (1:30 AM CDT).
Residents in Coosa County, particularly Rockford, should take immediate action to prepare for hazardous wind, potential moderate flooding, and the possibility of tornadoes. Peak winds are forecasted at 10-20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Efforts to protect property should be underway now. Limited damage to porches, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible, along with broken tree limbs and scattered power outages.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches, with locally higher amounts, could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and small streams may overflow, and floodwaters could enter structures. Driving conditions may become hazardous with potential road closures.
The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for tornadoes, with a potential for several, some possibly intense. Emergency plans should include preparation for tornadoes. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued. Significant tornado impacts could include damage to homes, demolished mobile homes, large trees snapped, and power/communication failures. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
