Tip of the Week - Private Timber Lands
Private timber land access is restricted due to littering, theft, and vandalism. Residents can help by reporting issues and practicing responsible forest use.

Residents who frequent Oregon's private timber lands may have noticed increased restrictions, including locked gates. While some believe this is a simple denial of access, officials state the closures are a direct response to a rise in littering, vehicle abandonment, theft of forest products, and vandalism.
Acts of vandalism include damage to roads and access gates caused by off-road vehicles. These issues not only detract from the natural beauty of the forests but also incur costs for cleanup and repairs, which are ultimately borne by private timber companies and county taxpayers.
To help preserve access and protect these valuable lands, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is reminding the public of ways to contribute. Visitors are urged to read posted signs at entry points, which often contain crucial information such as details on log truck activity. Reporting any criminal acts, dump sites, or abandoned vehicles to law enforcement is also encouraged.
When visiting private and public forest lands, residents should be mindful of land use restrictions and always dispose of trash properly. The Sheriff's Office specifically advises against discarding glass, cans, rubbish, trash, garbage, debris, or litter in forests or waterways. Similarly, draining sewage or waste from vehicles onto private land without permission is prohibited.
For those who enjoy target shooting, it's important to clean up all materials, including brass and targets, after use. The Sheriff's Office also asks residents to report anyone observed hauling trash or debris into forest areas. Bringing an extra trash bag to collect litter encountered during a visit is another simple way to help.
For questions about land access or to report issues, residents can contact the landowner or the Lincoln County Sheriff’s office Forest Patrol at (541)-265-4277. More information and tips are available on the Sheriff's Office website at www.lincolncountysheriff.net and their Facebook page.
