Thunderstorm Warning: Pea-Sized Hail Expected in Del Norte and Humboldt Counties
A Special Weather Statement has been issued by NWS Eureka CA for rural areas of South Central Del Norte and North Central Humboldt Counties, warning of strong thunderstorms with pea-sized hail and frequent lightning until 5:30 PM PDT today.
Residents in rural areas of South Central Del Norte and North Central Humboldt Counties, including those near Highway 96, are advised to monitor weather conditions and seek shelter due to a Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Eureka CA.
As of 5:04 PM PDT, Doppler radar detected strong thunderstorms 10 miles north of Weitchpec, or 11 miles west of Orleans. These storms are moving northwest at 15 mph and are expected to bring pea-sized hail. The NWS indicates that minor damage to outdoor objects is possible.
This Special Weather Statement is effective immediately and expires at 5:30 PM PDT on September 16, 2026. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is occurring with this storm, and lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building or vehicle immediately. Monitor the weather situation closely and be alert for threatening weather conditions.
