Residents in Rockcastle, Pulaski, and Laurel Counties are advised to seek safe shelter immediately as a Special Weather Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, KY, effective until 11:00 PM EDT tonight, September 21.

At 10:25 PM EDT, NWS radar indicated a cluster of strong thunderstorms near Billows, approximately 14 miles east of Somerset, moving northeast at 15 mph. These storms are capable of producing wind gusts up to 40 mph. Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring, which may lead to localized flooding. Drivers are warned not to drive vehicles through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is associated with these storms, and lightning can strike up to 10 miles away. Seek shelter inside a building or vehicle for safety.

Areas impacted include Mount Vernon, Sand Springs, and East Bernstadt. This alert also covers Interstate 75 between mile markers 43 and 64, Kentucky Highway 80 in Laurel County between mile markers 1 and 8, and Kentucky Highway 80 in Pulaski County between mile markers 27 and 40.
