Drivers in portions of northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana are advised to increase following distance and use low-beam headlights this morning due to locally dense fog. A Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago indicates that visibilities may be reduced to one-quarter mile or less in some areas.
The affected counties in Illinois include Boone, McHenry, Lake, De Kalb, Kane, DuPage, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, Northern Cook, Southern Cook, Northern Will, Southern Will, and Eastern Will. In Indiana, Lake and Porter counties are also impacted. This advisory is in effect as of 7:04 AM CDT and is expected to expire by 9:30 AM CDT today, September 27, 2026, as the fog is predicted to gradually dissipate through mid-morning.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution and adjust their driving to the conditions. The NWS advises increasing the distance between vehicles and utilizing low-beam headlights for improved visibility and safety during this period of reduced visibility.
