ACTION REQUIRED: Severe Thunderstorm Warning for El Paso, Pueblo Counties

Residents in parts of El Paso and Pueblo Counties, particularly near Pinon and Hanover, must seek immediate shelter. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Pueblo has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning effective immediately until 10:00 PM MDT tonight, September 20.

At 9:39 PM MDT, a severe thunderstorm was detected near Pinon, approximately 17 miles north of Pueblo Airport, moving southeast at 20 mph. This storm is capable of producing tennis ball-sized hail and wind gusts up to 70 mph. Radar indicated the presence of these hazards.

Significant impacts are expected. People and animals outdoors face injury. Anticipate extensive damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles from hail. Considerable tree damage is likely, and wind damage to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings is also probable.

Locations specifically impacted include Hanover. The NWS advises moving to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building for protection. Remain alert for the possibility of a tornado. If a tornado is spotted, immediately go to a basement or a small central room within a sturdy structure.
