Wildfires prompt evacuations across Western North America

Wildfires continue to burn across large swaths of the western United States and Canada, prompting authorities to issue evacuation orders and air quality warnings. Residents in multiple states and provinces have left their homes as fire crews work to contain the blazes.

In California, the Post Fire has grown to over 15,600 acres in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Officials issued evacuation orders for areas including Paradise Cove Mobile Home Park and warned residents in western Castaic of potential danger. Firefighters have achieved 24% containment of the Post Fire. A separate incident, the Point Fire in Sonoma County, has burned over 1,200 acres and forced evacuations near Lake Sonoma.

Wildfires also affect New Mexico, where the South Fork Fire and Salt Fire have collectively burned more than 20,000 acres near Ruidoso. Authorities have ordered the evacuation of Ruidoso, instructing residents to leave without delay. Officials report zero containment for both fires.

Arizona has seen the growth of the Rose Fire to nearly 1,600 acres in the Wickenburg area. Firefighters achieved 13% containment by Tuesday. Authorities issued an evacuation order for portions of the community of Peeples Valley.

Across the border, British Columbia, Canada, is experiencing several wildfires. The St. Mary's River Wildfire near Cranbrook prompted an evacuation alert for approximately 50 properties, though firefighters achieved 60% containment by Tuesday. Two new wildfires, the Ndazkhot'en Fire and the Grizzly Lake Fire, have emerged in the province's northeast, covering 5,000 hectares and 2,000 hectares, respectively. These fires have led to additional evacuation orders and alerts. Officials indicate that many of British Columbia's fires resulted from lightning strikes.

Smoke from these fires has impacted air quality across wide regions. The National Weather Service issued an air quality alert for parts of Montana, citing smoke originating from fires in British Columbia. Additionally, air quality advisories remain in effect for northern Utah and parts of Colorado.
