ST. JOSEPH / BRANCH COUNTIES – Residents in St. Joseph and Branch Counties are advised to seek shelter indoors as strong thunderstorms approach the area. A Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Northern Indiana at 8:49 PM EDT on September 15, 2026, indicates that these storms are tracking east at 30 mph.
Doppler radar shows a line of strong thunderstorms extending from near Union City to near Centreville. Hazards include wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea-sized hail. Gusty winds could potentially knock down tree limbs and displace unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is also possible.
Areas expected to be impacted include Coldwater, Union City, Colon, Girard, Leonidas, Mendon, Sherwood, South Butler, Wasepi, Hodunk, and Fairfax. This also includes Interstate 69 in Michigan between mile markers 13 and 21.
The Special Weather Statement is effective immediately and is set to expire at 9:30 PM UTC (5:30 PM EDT) today, September 15, 2026. The NWS advises that if you are outdoors, you should consider seeking shelter inside a building for your safety.
